Recipes - Salves, Balms, Ointments

Chapped Skin Camphor Cream Salve

1 cake (1 oz.) paraffin
1 oz. White beeswax
3/4 cup white petroleum jelly
1 1/2 oz powdered gum camphor

Grate paraffin and beeswax. Heat with the petroleum jelly in double boiler over a gentle flame. When mixture begins to liquefy, stir in powdered camphor and continue stirring briskly until everything is melted and well blended. Remove cream from heat. Let cool and pour into jars.

Gardeners / Excema Salve

8 oz petroleum jelly
1/4 cup beeswax
1 tbs lanolin
10-15 drops lavender oil

Heat together, pour into jar and let cool. Rub a little into affected area right after a bath while the skin is still moist.

Itch Relief Salve

1 pint sweet olive oil
2 ounces beeswax
1 tbs chickweed powder
1 tbs comfrey powder (if not pregnant)

Put chickweed and comfrey powders into sweet olive oil and simmer 3 hours. Strain and add beeswax. Pour into salve jars or tins.

Calendula Ointment

1 lb. Coconut oil (or Crisco)
2 good handfuls calendula blossoms
a bit of comfrey, (if not pregnant)

Put oil and blossoms into a pot over very low heat for 30 min. Calendula should be crispy but not burnt. Filter into jars, and keep cool. Rub some on spider veins (twice a day), bruises, dry skin, cracked lips.

Spider veins should start showing visible improvement in about 3 weeks or so, and take a about 6 months to clear up. Make a double infusion for varicose veins.

Healing Ointment

1 tbs avocado oil
2 tsp fractionated coconut oil
.3 oz beeswax
.3 oz anhydrous lanolin
1 tsp essential oil

Melt all ingredients together. Add essential oils. Stir well and pour into sterilized container.

Soothing Lip Balm

5 to 6 Tbsp. quality vegetable oil (sesame, canola, sunflower)
1 Tbsp. beeswax
2 tsp. pure honey
10 drops tea tree essential oil for chapped, flaky lips

Melt together the oil and beeswax, and microwave until wax is just melted. Use the larger amount of oil if you want a thinner, glossier consistency. Add honey and blend mixture thoroughly. Stir the mixture occasionally as it cools to prevent separation.

Add the essential oil after almost cooled and stir thoroughly.

Tiger Balm

The following recipe is good to apply externally to unbroken skin to help sore muscles and the like. Applied under the nose, it helps respiration when congested. First, make the oil. You can use it pure or later add it to petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to make the balm.

1 Wintergreen oil
45 ml Camphor oil
15 ml Eucalyptus oil
7 ml Lavender oil 5 ml
Peppermint oil 8 ml
Almond oil 20 ml

Combine all.
