Valentine Heart Magnets
Materials:
1 cup of salt
1/3 cup of water
1/2 cup of cornstarch
1/4 cup of cold water
Food coloring and/or tempera paints
Heart cookie cutter
Store bought magnets and/or pin backings
Hot glue gun
Make the clay:
Heat salt and 1/3 cup of water over medium high heat for 4 minutes, stirring
occasionally. Remove from the heat and add cornstarch and 1/4 cup of cold
water. The mixture should look like thick mashed potatoes, stir until it
thickens, then let cool for a few minutes before kneading. If the dough seems
too sticky at first work in extra cornstarch as you knead. Add food coloring if
you desire.
Using a rolling pin or hands flatten the dough to 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch
thickness depending on your preference. Using the cookie cutter cut out hearts.
Place them on a piece of plastic wrap or waxed paper and let dry. They should
stand and dry for 1-4 days.
After the hearts are dried completely, they are ready to be painted. Using the
paints decorate the hearts. Be creative. After the paint has dried you can
varnish or shellac them for a shiny finish. Using the hot glue gun attach the
magnet or pin backing.
